A Brief History…
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the film capacitor market faced significant challenges in establishing a distribution network in the New England area. Despite various attempts, manufacturers like Plessy found that established distributors were reluctant to carry film capacitors, viewing them as niche products with limited demand.
In response to this distribution gap, Plessy strategically engaged with Gerber Sales Corporation, a local manufacturer’s representative with the knowledge and connections necessary to penetrate the market effectively. Recognizing the potential for growth in this segment, Plessy requested Gerber Sales and their area representatives to stock a range of popular capacitor values. This approach aimed to ensure that local customers had access to the products they needed, fostering relationships and expanding product availability in a competitive landscape.
Gerber Sales Corporation's commitment to stocking Plessey's products demonstrated not only the potential for increased sales but also a willingness to innovate within a market environment that had previously shown resistance. The collaboration laid the groundwork for a more robust distribution strategy, allowing both Plessey and Gerber to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the electronics sector during this transformative period.
By 1972, a considerable inventory was developed, leading to the establishment of Atlantic Components as a division of Gerber Sales Corporation focused on the buying and reselling of film capacitors. The growing demand for high-quality electronic components prompted this strategic move, allowing for enhanced service and efficiency in the marketplace.
In 1979, the dynamic landscape of the capacitor industry expanded with the arrival of the German manufacturer Roederstein, which established a plant in Statesville, North Carolina. This development was pivotal for Atlantic Components, as it forged a partnership that positioned the company as Roederstein Electronics' inaugural distributor in the United States. This recognition marked a significant milestone in Atlantic Components’ journey, solidifying its reputation in the industry and furthering its commitment to providing exceptional components to meet the needs of local and global markets.
By 1992, Atlantic Components had established a robust portfolio, encompassing ten product line franchises. This impressive growth necessitated a strategic relocation from their initial base within the Gerber Sales office to an independent office and warehouse facility in Burlington, MA. To maintain a clear distinction and avoid any conflicts of interest with the principles of Gerber Sales, Atlantic Components opted not to promote its offerings actively within the New England market. The landscape shifted significantly in 1996 when Gerber Sales Corporation was divested, leading to the official formation of Atlantic Components Corporation.
